1. Critical Review about AmigaOS 3.5 and Support for it (by Joerg Hintze)
»Some time ago I bought OS 3.5, after installation several problems/
faults/absurdities of OS 3.5 appeared on my system:
- After execution of setpatch the IDE HD vanishes, at least here, and
cannot be accessed any more. Only after execution of IDEFix it pops
up again.
- The progress display is not correct, what may clearly be seen when
copying bigger files (tested with appr. 42 MB).
- Copying a file takes longer than with OS 3.1! With OS 3.1 a file
of 42 MB is on another partition of the same HD after appr. 9 seconds
(using UW-SCSI and UW-SCSI HD). With OS 3.5 it takes appr. 36 seconds
depending upon the file system and patches applied. When using FFS you
finish beyond the 60 seconds margin. Here I ran for testing purposes
PFS 2, SFS and FFS. Presently I use SFS.
- When transforming one of the PFS2 partitions to SFS problems arose
when booting. The computer entered in "any case" an endless guru loop.
Again OS 3.1 had to take over to install the partition correctly. The
reason could not be localized properly, but somehow it seemed to
be connected with setpatch.
- Where are the updated printer drivers that were promised? Until now
only one brand of printers is supported.
- Where is the PNG datatype, that was said to be on hand?
- There still is no OEM version of Miami, only a demo version.
Besides of a confirmation of receipt by the support department there was
no reaction upon those problems reported, even after I had sent the whole
statement twice inside of appr. 2 months to the relevant address.
