CanonMWB - Canon BJC-610/620 Icons for Magic Workbench (Made to match the Martin Huttenloher icon set.) So, what's this all about? Well, ever since I installed MagicWB onto my hard drive, I've been looking for icons to use with my Canon BJC-610 printer and CanonStudio drivers. After downloading scores of icon sets from various sources and finding nothing I liked, I finally decided it was time to make my own. I had one I did previously that looked like a Canon (the artillery piece), but I don't think I did such a tremendously great job on it and it didn't really convey what the icon was even for. It wasn't bad, but it just wasn't quite as good as I wanted it to be. (No, I didn't include it in this archive, so you'll just have to guess what it looked like.) So what do I get? Basically, it's 24 icons with a Canon BJC-610/620 printer on them. I run my Workbench at NTSC:640x400 Interlaced and the icons look fine. I have no idea what they would look like at other resolutions. (I suppose they would look as good as the rest of the MWB icons, right?) The icons are as follows: Canon.Printer.Small.1 A BJC-610/620 that spits out a little image when you click on it. (You may notice that it's the same blotch of color that's on the regular Martin Huttenloher icons. I wanted my icons to match.) Canon.Printer.Small.2 The same as Small.1, but with the paper support pushed down. (I actually did this icon first and saved it before I realized that I forgot to draw the paper support. After I did a version with the support, I thought it looked kind of funny, so I kept this icon, but made it version 2, because I thought the primary icon should show the complete printer. Confused yet?) Canon.Printer.Small.3 The same as Small.1 and Small.2, but the paper tray looks like it has more than one sheet of paper in it. (Less dramatic to watch, but more realistic.) Now after I did these, it occurred to me that the printer looked a little small for the icons, especially compared to Martin's icons. His pictures seem to jump right off their icons. So I created the following: Canon.Printer.Big.1 Canon.Printer.Big.2 Canon.Printer.Big.3 These are the same as their "Small" counterparts, but with bigger printer pictures (obviously). Now after I did those, it then occurred to me that people might want to use my icons to actually replace the ones that came with MWB. (After all, they look like Hewlett-Packards, don't they?) So I figured I should make icons for "PrinterGfx". With the standard set, the only difference between "Printer" and "PrinterGfx" is that PrinterGfx has a little printed piece of paper by the printer. I used the same approach. (In fact, my little piece of paper has the same image as Martin's. Like I said, I wanted to match.) This produced the following: Canon.PrinterGfx.Small.1 Canon.PrinterGfx.Small.2 Canon.PrinterGfx.Small.3 Canon.PrinterGfx.Big.1 Canon.PrinterGfx.Big.2 Canon.PrinterGfx.Big.3 Of course these are all the same as above, but with little printed pictures by the printer. Now when that was all done, something was still bothering me. I made my icons so that the front of the printer was grey (yes, like Martin's). The problem with that is that the Canon printer has a much larger face than the printer on the regular icon, and I therefore figured it might be too grey for some people. So, you guessed it, I recolored all the icons. This produced all of these: White.Printer.Small.1 White.PrinterGfx.Small.1 White.Printer.Small.2 White.PrinterGfx.Small.2 White.Printer.Small.3 White.PrinterGfx.Small.3 White.Printer.Big.1 White.PrinterGfx.Big.1 White.Printer.Big.2 White.PrinterGfx.Big.2 White.Printer.Big.3 White.PrinterGfx.Big.3 All exactly the same as above, but with completely white printers. Of course I left the original white/grey icons in case someone wanted (you guessed it again) a completely matching set. Finally, I've included three more just for fun: Blank.MWB.Prefs.Icon This icon is an exact copy of the "base" Prefs icon Martin used for his icons. I'm including it so that other people (like yourself) don't have to go to the trouble of making your own icon template. You could say, "It looks like you took one of Martin's icons (like "Pointer", for instance) and wiped it clean and used it." You COULD say that, but for legal reasons, we won't. We'll just say that it's an EXACT copy. Martin is given credit for his "inspiration" in the icon's information window. Beyond that, I suppose you could put your name on the icons you create with it. I put my name on mine. Just don't be selling your icons, okay? We don't want to get into any trouble, right? Blank.MWB.Tools.Icon This icon is another exact copy. But this time of course it's of (you guessed it) the Tools icon. This icon didn't actually have anything to do with this project, but I figured it would be nice if I could save people the trouble of making those as well. So here you have it. ReadMe The icon I did for this ReadMe file is one I did to relax (yes, relax) after I was done with the Canon icons. (Squinting for hours over detailed little icons is not a real thrill for the eyes. That's probably subconsciously why the eyes on the ReadMe icon are open so wide!) Huh? Looks like a mess to me.... As you can see, it's all pretty simple. But if you choose to avoid the headache of wading through all this, then just look at all the icons, pick one, and use it! (I bet you wish I'd said that in the first place.) So which icons do you use? Only one, actually. I'm using "White.Printer.Big.1" for my program "CanonBJECPref", which I've renamed "CanonBJC". (After all, it's obvious it's a "Pref" program, that's why it's in the Prefs drawer! And where did the "E" come from? My printer says BJC on it, not BJEC! As for my "Printer" and "PrinterGfx" tools, I'm using the original icons. (After all, I didn't go to all that trouble to make my icons match just so I wouldn't have any other printer icons to compare them to! Besides, if I had replaced the standard icons, then my "CanonBJC" and "Printer" icons would be the same. This would probably have caused me to do another 12 icons just so they would be different!) You probably noticed that I'm using one of the "White" icons. I feel that they're nice enough to justify not matching perfectly. (I'm not bragging, I just really like the completely white icons better. That's kind of funny, considering I've been talking about how important matching has been to me!) Anything else? Yes, actually. These icons were a labor of love. After hours (yes, hours) of work (including typing this ReadMe) I'm really pleased with how they turned out. The result has been its own reward. And as such, I expect no financial gain from them. And I expect no one else to expect any financial gain from them. If somebody needs to charge the cost of a disk or the cost of shipping a disk with these icons on them, that would be okay, but these icons should be FREE! Anybody who wants to distribute them has my full permission to do so in any way or fashion they desire. I just don't want them profiting from work I have done as a gift to the Amiga community (small gift though it may be). Of course, you've probably downloaded these yourself, so hopefully cost hasn't even been much of a factor. Considering all that, my hope is that eventually there might be icons available out there for every application (even the odd little ones) to go along with whatever MWB icon set you happen to be using (not just Martin's set). We've all got to help each other, right? The one thing I would like is that if you use my icons and like them, please send me a letter or a postcard or an e-mail telling me so. (Yes, do it. If you don't, then no one else will. Besides, I would e-mail you if you asked me to. Really.) I'd love to know how far my "babies" have made it around the world! If you have any nice MWB icons you've found (or made), I wouldn't grumble if you sent them along (especially if they match Martin's set). If I can't use them, I'll try to pass them on to others who can. On the other hand, if you hate my icons, you could tell me that too, but you'd probably be better off trying to find or make ones you do like! Either way, I can be reached by regular mail at: W. I probably would've done it by now, but I don't have any clear pictures to work from (yet). Of course I didn't need any pictures for the current icons since I have a BJC-610 on my desk! Oh, and in case you haven't figured it out by now, I didn't make an icon for "PrinterPS". The Canon BJC series aren't PostScript printers, so it would have been pretty pointless, right?
