Lundie © 27/1/1998 *************************************************************************** What is it? =========== Here it is: another obscure patch editor. This time for the Yamaha QS300 protocol, and all the MIDI gear that supports it (eg Yamaha XG modules). Like most patch editors, this one came into being through necessity. I made CU Amiga's "Project XG" and I was disappointed by the total lack of Amiga software to control it. I could play notes via OctaMED but getting at all its groovy features (like filters, user-defined voices etc..) had me spending hours writing SysEx data by hand- not fun as you can imagine! So I used my rusty, 1.3 vintage programming skills to write this program. Disclaimer ========== The author cannot be held responsible for any damage done to your hi-fi, MIDI gear or computer system, whether through his negligence or yours. So if you set the feedback levels too high and blow up your hi-fi/eardrums, it's not my fault! This software is placed in the public domain and is freely distributable. This software is PATCHWARE: if you make any decent patches with it, please send them to me. What can it do? =============== - Edit patches in the QS300 format - Send them to your MIDI devices and play them - Load and save them in OctaMED Soundstudio SysEx format - Quit :-) That's all- if you want more features email me with your ideas, and I'll implement them as soon as I can. Requirements ============ - QS300 compatible MIDI device on the serial port - A manual for the aforementioned device - Workbench 2+ (For asl.library) - 70k free memory, 12k of which should be chip Usage ===== Go into a shell, CD to the QS300PatchEd directory and type QS300PatchEd. Within a second you will be confronted by a butt-ugly window with 2 sliders and some numbers on it, and if your QS300 compatible MIDI device is the same as mine you will hear a low orchestra hit type noise. The top slider selects the element of the patch you wish to change, and the bottom slider changes the value of that parameter. As you move the bottom slider, your MIDI device will play the current patch through channel 0 at note C-3. See your manual for what all the elements do. Try messing with parameter 3E (Wave number LSB), and 60 (cutoff frequency). Both these have a pretty dramatic effect on the sound. If this doesn't happen please let me know what MIDI device you're trying to use with the program and I'll look into it. You can then save the patch to disk, to be loaded into OctaMED as a SysEx dump. The sysex dump contains the patch itself, and information to select that patch as the active instrument on channel 0. Plans ===== - Support for saving/loading other file formats (if demand exists) - Support for patch numbers / MIDI channels apart from 0 (!!!) - Support for 2 element patches - Use of CAMD instead of just the serial port, when I can figure out how to use it - Nicer looking and slightly more font-sensitive GUI - Control of the XG echo/chorus/reverb effects (though this will probably be a separate program) Author ====== Please let me know if you're using the program, and tell me what you think of it.
