It has been said that whatever 'software only upgrade' version (call it
3.5) comes out later this year, it WILL require version 3.1 roms. I would
hazard a guess that this means it wont be kickable ...

The major upgrade (call it 4.0), scheduled for next year will be a rom and
software upgrade.
