PIOS One no Mac clone (30-May-97 )

Dr. Peter Kittel repeats once again that the ONE is no Mac clone, but a machine compliant to CHRP or PPCP. The MacOS will run on it, but it was not designed to just run the MacOS. the ONE's architecture is a mixture of the A2000/A3000 and the BeBox, plus one I/O chip designed by Apple and another I/O chip designed by Intel thrown in.

Colors vs. resolution (29-May-97 )

Dr. Peter Kittel says Commodore had to chose between "more colors" or "better resolution". Due to time- and money-constraints, both couldn't be implemented in the AGA chips. The users wanted more colors, and so higher resolutions were scheduled for a later date (and eventually completely forgotten).

Gateway vs. MS/Intel (26-May-97 )

Jason Compton says Gateway's "we're sick of Intel/MS" press release will not imply that they will now concentrate on Amigas. The strongest implication has been that Gateway may switch from Intel to AMD. It's a general statement of independence, of which the Amiga is playing a part, but the Amiga is not going to replace their PCs..

Haircuts, part 1 (26-May-97 )

Dr. Peter Kittel says he thinkspeople with long hair and pony tail [are] trustworthy, of the right spirit. He reminds that Bob Pariseau, of Amiga Los Gatos, who did the Amiga's presentation in 1985 had hair reaching down to his hips. Dave Haynie has also a pony tail, but there are also a lot of nice Amiga people with short hair.

Haircuts, part 2 (26-May-97 )

Don Romero replies to recent posts about the hairstyle of Gateway employees and says he doesn't care about that person's hair. Ya have to respect any major PC retailer CEO who isn't afraid to take pokes at Microsoft and Intel for, e.g., the damage their dominance is doing to the development of the personal computer. This really could be fun. His head and heart certainly seems to be in the right place.

Maxon not leaving Amiga? (25-May-97 )

A recent article hinted that Maxon may leave the Amiga. Michael Stueber forwards a quote from Amiga Magazin 5/97 that doesn't verify this. Maxon say that there were no plans, and will be no plans, to leave the Amiga. Amiga products will continue to be developed and distributed. [But no information on PPC ports].

Against droppig the Amiga's price (23-May-97 )

Jason Compton says he recently heard a valid argument against dropping the Amiga prices. Since there won't be new production, dropping the price so sharply would exhaust the supply fairly quickly, and then there would be another gap in which dealers couldn't sell computers.

"No custom chipsets please" (23-May-97 )

Ben Hutchins thinks the custom chipset has been holding the Amiga back since around 1989. He points out that current [standard] graphics chips are faster and development requires huge amounts of money and research. Therefore, Gateway will probably not develop Amigas with custom chips, when even big companies like IBM don't develop their own custom gfx chips. He ends his post with the question if the AmigaOS is so weak that it would need a custom chipset.

"Under investigation" & Design philosophy (22-May-97 )

Dr. Peter Kittel thinks "under investigation" was one of the more frequent phrases [of Petro T.] used in replies at the WoA. Apparently, it's "under investigation" whether AI will do R&D itself or outsource it to partnet companies. He also quotes parts of Petro's speech and says that Dave [Haynie] couldn't have expressed better the philosophy of his [PIOS's] design.

Vapor registration complaints (22-May-97 )

Apparently, Voyager registrations aren't very reliable. This is just one of the many complaints flotaing around at the moment. Marc M. Pflugmann is talking about a delay of nearly two months for his registration.

AmigaOS 3.1 informations (21-May-97 )

George Noel gives precisions about the history of the AmigaOS 3.1. In 1994 Commodore were too worried about going bankrupt to put OS 3.1 in new AGA machines. Village Tronic was the only company who got the rights to produce and distribute the OS 3.1. This was the only way to get OS 3.1 in your computer, and this monopoly was the main reason for the high price tag.

Workbench 3.0 vs 3.1 (20-May-97 )

Dr. Peter Kittel says Workbench 3.1 was a significant improvement over 3.0. 3.0 was just a quick hack to get the A4000 (and later A1200 and A4000T) out the door. Only later it was cleaned up and was made backwards compatible with ECS and OCS, and accelerated also during all this!

Phillip A. Cochran posts his 2 pence about the WOA. He says he had severe problems finding the Novotel (where the WOA was to take place). After finding it, he was surprised to find an area three times too small for the amount of people crammed into it.

Phase5 quality complaints (18-May-97 )

Colin Ward says he's a little worried about the quality of the CyberVision 64/3D software drivers and he questions whether Phase5 can bring out an OS for the A\Box that can follow up the Amiga. He says the CyberGraphX software is a bit buggy and not very intuitive.

Maxon leaving the Amiga? (17-May-97 )

According to Jens Maertens, Maxon may leave the Amiga. He says he mailed their webmaster, who said they wouldn't develop for Phase5's PowerUp because they didn't get any developer tools. This means that there is no Maxon C++ for PPC being developed, whereas Haage's StormC is already available. This may mean that Maxon are not interested in porting their software to PPC Amiga users. [Or it may mean that there are problems with Phase5. -Y]

Petro T. Statement (16-May-97 )

In an official statement by Petro Tyschtschenko at a press conference in London, May 16, 1997, Petro gives a brief summary of the Amiga's recent history, looks optimistically in the future and gives information in which general direction AI will be heading. He says they will be working with developers through concepts such as the "Open AMIGA Initiative". For us to keep the market alive it is neccessary to assist many companies in developing products through broad licensing. Our licensing policy will be very open, broad and focus on licensing and standard O/S, Chipsets and the trademarks.

Amiga International Acquisition Finalized (16-May-97 )

Rembrandt de Witt forwards he official Amiga International Inc. press release, dated May 16 1997, that says that the Amiga International acquisition has been finalized. Petro T. is quoted as saying that their strategy is very clear, it will be focused on reviving the market for AMIGA. We will support the community that has kept AMIGA alive through bankcruptcy. AI plans to support the existing Amiga community, license Amiga technology and assist in developing new products based on open standards to the home computer and video/graphics market.

200MHz accelerator (15-May-97 )

Madhu Surendranath posts some more information about the rumoured 200 MHz accelerater for the Amiga. It is called "Impulse Supercharger" and will be sold in the UK by Instrinic Computer Systems. The device is said to enable existing accelerators to triple and quadruple their speeds, the price is expected to be 130-150 UKP.

Girish Nath says he saw an article in a magazine that said that the author of MUI will port to major successors of the Amiga. He assumes that Phase5 is a quite major successor, so he supposes it is likely that there will be a port for Phase5's PPC cards.

Apparently, the current issue of the TIME has a report on the planned Compaq buyout of Gateway2000. As we all know this failed, but according to the Time, the decision was pretty much complete, but failed because of problems with the management.

JAVA, C compilers and more (14-May-97 )

Michael Schulz forwards a "news-mix" from several Haage & Partner announcements. They are working on MERAPI, that will bring Java to the Amiga; StormC versions for pOS and PowerUp are ready. Other new products are Tornado3D, a 3D program, and NetConnect a package with TCP stack and Vaporware's Internet programs (Voyager, AMIRC...)

Phase5 News (13-May-97 )

According to Florent Gluck, Phase5 have announced price reductions on all accelerators and the CyberVision 3D. They also announced a PPC604e card for the A2000 and a PPC version of the CyberVision.

Apparently, the Amiga International homepage has been updated. Amongst others, the Staff page has changed, with a new webmaster being mentioned and two existing staff members also being listed as working in the "Logistics department".

High demand for used A2000's (11-May-97 )

Dave Haynie replies to a post asking why there are so many ads in the magazines of companies wanting to buy used A2000's. He says the Preview Channel, which is running on many cable systems, and which uses Amigas bought some old systems from him a year ago and paid nicely. He suspects the A2000 is especially attractive because it's a larger box and fits nicely in a standard rack.

PowerUp programs! (11-May-97 )

Michael Schulz forwards an announcement of the first PowerUp program from Cloanto. The personal_ppc_blit.library is a replacement for the Amiga's blitter that takes advantage of the PPC speed and as such is more than twice as fast as the AGA Amiga hardware blitter.

Internal information (08-May-97 )

As you may have noticed, I have severely modified the layout of this page. The current approach is much neater, as it doesn't rely on a background image anymore. Additionally, the source of these pages is now "modular", so that from now on I can change the layout of the whole text with only one changement in a prefs file. I hope you like the new look of this page, I certainly do. ;-)

pOS vs. BeOS (08-May-97 )

Dr. Peter Kittel says PIOS are including both pOS and BeOS with the PIOS One, as both are rather new and yet incomplete, so there are only speculations about their market chances and final capabilities. Both have their promising features and some limits. So it's a competition, and nobody can tell in the moment which one will turn out as the better. So we have to keep a rather neutral position.

Crap Towers (07-May-97 )

Markus Marquardt posts yet another impression on one of the tower kits that are out there. He says that the quality is pretty low, that "easy fitting" of the components is not possible, that buyers are supposed to work on the PSU and that the documentation is from 1995. He ends his post with the advice that you should not buy a tower kit if you're no expert. Not surprisingly he doesn't want to name the manufacturer of the tower kit.

Tim DeWitt forwards an imaginary G2000 press release written by George Noël. Tim DeWitt says he liked it, but other posters didn't seem to like it at all, as George Noël was refering to the Amiga as lesbian computer, talking about Mr. Dull EL. Larson and GAY2KAY.

A phone call from Petro T... (06-May-97 )

Rainer Benda says he just received a phone call from Petro T., who apparently is reading the newsgroups... Apparently, Petro T. doesn't really like Rainer's attitude towards him, especially as Rainer is Amiga retailer and as such depending on AI. In reply, Rainer writes that he thinks Petro is incapable, that he doesn't post his opinion as a revenge for being kicked out at AT, that Petro should be happy about any Amga retailer thst still exists. He also points out that AT's attitude to have the same prices for retailers and end users is a bit strange...

PIOS One "in the spirit of" Amiga (04-May-97 )

According to Dr. Peter Kittel, the PIOS One introduces the architecture of Amiga accelerator cards into the PPCP/CHRP world. The ONE a PPCP/CHRP machine, not a PC, but provides means to use PC cards. They are using the pOS, because it follows the principles of AmigaOS of being extremely compact and efficient and because it has the potential to become the fastest OS on the PPC and on the PC, as proDAD also plan a port for Intel PC's.
