The One, browsers and gfx cards (27-Feb-97 )

The PIOS ONE will come with net stuff, actually the BeOS includes a good browser and other net software. PIOS will include one of the cards that is already available for the Be; you can find a list on www.be.com. According to Dr. Peter Kittel, the PIOS ONE is intended as computer for graphics, audio, animation applications, i.e. multimedia.

PC ports (27-Feb-97 )

Andreas Kürzinger asked Blue Byte about Amiga versions of Albion and Battle Isle 2 and they said "yes". The idea is that an Amiga programmer does the port on its own (without financial support), but that he only receives money on the copies sold. This could also work for other companies.

Operating systems on the ONE (25-Feb-97 )

According to Dr. Peter Kittel, UAE will be the only possibility for complete Amiga compatibility on the ONE. UAE is pretty slow, but he can imagine having it a bit more optimised to its host machine. BeOS will be the first OS running on the ONE, and there already is a UAE port for it.

The A\Box according to Dave Haynie (25-Feb-97 )

Dave Haynie comments the A\Box. Keep in mind that timing is everything. Next year, faster machines will be commonplace, and they [Phase5] won't look as good. He adds: The problem with the A\Box is that it's likely to suffer from AAA-itis and says that despite Phase5 being bigger than PIOS, they could still encounter problems like the chip development project to run twice the forcast budget.

QuikPak broke? (24-Feb-97 )

According to Amiga Plus, a German Amiga magazine, QuikPak don't have enough money to buy the Amiga. They also say that there are 10 bidders for it.

New Amiga? (24-Feb-97 )

There are rumours of a new Amiga being revealed to the world at the World of Amiga Show in May 1997. It is said to have Zorro and PCI slots, a 68060 with 22 MB RAM as well as the usual additional hardware. The price is said to be 1000 UKP at most. The poster points out that this is neither an Amiga produced by QuikPak nor the A\Box.

PIOS ONE - Amiga successor? (24-Feb-97 )

In reply to a post saying that the PIOS ONE is no Amiga, Dave Haynie replied that he designed them for eight years, and that the PIOS One is the direction we were heading with the Amiga when Commodore died.

Haynie statement about PCs (20-Feb-97 )

According to Dave Haynie, PC's are not that bad. Basically, if you're having problems with the OS on a PC, IT'S THE OS, NOT THE HARDWARE. If AmigaOS came out for the x86 PC tomorrow, you'd love it.. He adds that in Windows, here is just too much "magic" stuff going on, and that it doesn't allow you as much control over the system as the Amiga does. He finishes the article with the words Microsoft wants you to be their dog..

PIOS ONE description (20-Feb-97 )

Manou Billa forwarded the PIOS news from 19.2.97 to the newsgroups. The article contains technical information, as well as the announcement of the Hydra chip that will allow SCSI-support as well as CHRP compatibility.

pOS comments (20-Feb-97 )

Somebody who was in Zurich [at some developer meeting, where the pOS was presented] says that he really likes pOS, that it is faster than AmigaOS and supports RTG more completely. However, that person says that he does not see any future [can somebody please verify this, I'm not sure if I got the translation right], as there are no applications yet. He nevertheless called it AmigaDOS 5...

Amiga Quake (20-Feb-97 )

There is an unofficial support site for Quake at http://www.angeldos.demon.co.uk/index.html. The game supports AGA and graphics card, minimum hardware configuration is a 040/40 with FPU. Speed varies between 1 fps and 10 fps.

Jason Compton comments some Hembach statements. Firstly, he says, Hembach won't refuse any new bidders - he's no longer actively seeking them though. Second, he points out that Hembach would "like" to have a decision by February 28th - which does not necessarily mean that there will be a decision...

Hembach's Income (16-Feb-97 )

Dr. Peter Kittel confirms the statement that Hembach is still the trustee for Commodore Germany in three cases. He still gets money out of these three cases, so that one could come to the conclusion that he is not at all interested in getting everything settled quickly and that it appears [..] more and more that this [endless delaying] is his normal income.

Amiga buyout to happen soon (11-F )

According to "a source", Amiga Technologies will soon be bought. Apparently, there will be a drop in prices [of Amigas] and a leap in performance. The OS is said to be upgraded and there should be a v4.0 for both 680x0 and PPC. [Sounds unlikely to me. -Y]

Former Amiga-Magazin employee a Nazi? (09-F )

The current issue of CHIP, a big German PC magazine features an article about a person writing under the name of "rk" in Germany's Amiga-Magazin. It accuses him of being part of some Nazi movement in Germany. There has been no official reaction from Amiga-Magazin, and even though he was fired a short time ago, this may still be economically harmful for the magazine.

Famous Amiga uses (07-F )

A list of not-so-usual Amiga uses comes from Robert Iacullo. Among others, he cites Telemetry at NASA, an Arcade System and a system to melk 1600 cows mechanically from one Amiga. He adds that the first teleconferencing was done on Amigas, his source for all this being two former Commodore marketing executives.

QuikPaks new Amiga (02-Feb-97 )

The new A1630Lp Amiga that is announced on QuikPaks homepage is said to be a 1200 style computer with 68030 and built-in LCD screen. Supposedly it will have SCSI and will cost around $1000. This is not official, though, but is said to come from "someone" at QuikPak.

According to Jason Compton, A1200s are no longer being manufactured, but there's a pretty big stock of them in Europe. QuikPak is still making A4000Ts, however.
