Be Inc. will no longer develop BeBox'es. They will concentrate on the OS; it will be ported to the PowerMac architecture. It's very hard, actually impossible, for a small 50-person company like Be to keep up with the hardware engineering resources of the entire PowerMac market..

Microsoft bidding? (29-Jan-97 )

A possible explanation for Microsoft being mentioned as bidding for the Amiga might be that they are still owed money. They were at the New York auction a few years back, David Tiberio says, it is possible MS is still looking to claim on that debt. He adds that Microsoft might also want to either kill or control the Video Toaster market [by buying the Amiga].

How many bidders for AT? (27-Jan-97 )

"Somebody" expresses his doubts concerning the number of bidders for Amiga Technologies that was mentioned in an earlier post. According to "NewAmiga" (whoever that may be), there are 5 bidders for the Amiga, and that Sony, Microsoft, VIScorp and CEI are not bidding. He adds that QuikPak is bidding, but that they are the lowest bid and have not proved they have any money!!.. He finished his mail by saying that we should know very shortly who the successful bidder is. [How often have we heard that before?]

PIOS ONE news (25-Jan-97 )

Some questions concerning the PIOS ONE were asked to Dave Haynie. In reply to the question whether it would be PPCP (also called CHRP), he answered that the first prototype isn't, but that by production it may be. They haven't taken a look at porting (or having ported) Windows NT yet, but they have been approached by Apple, and talked with them somewhat, although Dave points out that they can't give any promises yet.

Dopus5 is busy formatting two disks at the same time, don't you love the way you can just "Drag n Drop" an archived file and watch it self extract. For that matter it's also nice to be able to have a look inside an archived file before you un-archive it... sorry, DPaint informs me that it's finished making a 600 frame animation.

Apparently a group of us who call themselves the Arise Initiative have had lots of discussions with Amiga legends recently; including Carl Sassenrath, Dave Haynie, Dale Luck, RJ Mical and Dale Larsen. It was suggested that these people should form a "Council of Wisemen" that would co-ordinate various ongoing projects. Their 'authority' would flow from their recognized ability and good sense, rather than from a corporate boardroom.

Buyout Conspiracy? (22-Jan-97 )

Yet another entry to the Amiga Buyout Conspiracy list comes from George Noel. In reply to a recent rumour that Bill Buck will bid for the Amiga, he says that this adds a new twist to the "sabotage from within" clause that goes with the Amiga and the fear of it being great again. He continues by asking himself whether Buck got paid to sabotage the Escom deal so that there would be no cheap interactive STB's from VIScorp. Is Bill Buck a front-man for Bill Gates?

QuikPak: Alpha & PowerPC? (19-Jan-97 )

Apparently older rumours that said QuikPak wouldn't support PowerPC but use 680x0/Alpha processors instead are not true. Dan Robinson, Director of Buisness Development for Amiga Computers at QuikPak said that he must have been misquoted and that they [QuikPak] are exploring both the Alpha and the PowerPC as the CPU for future Amiga Systems.

DANGER: Batteries failing (17-Jan-97 )

A warning for all A2000, A3000 and A4000 computers and A501/A2386 board owners comes from Hal Greenlee. He says that corrosive salts can leak from batteries (used for the realtime clocks) in the above-mentioned computers; especially if they weren't used for some time; resulting in severe damage. Amiga Technologies' FTP Server can't be accessed since 4 weeks, mails remain unanswered since two weeks, says Volker Moser. He mailed Amiga-Magazin, a German Amiga magazine and they said: We don't know either. We barely have any contact with the company anymore..

In opposition to many recent posts, Ryan Yochem, owner of "Y.C. Dominion Technologies", said that they sold 57 Amiga 1200's in the last month, just by word of mouth. He concludes that the Amiga is finding itself in a new market, a market for people that don't want to follow the Intel-obsiolete-after-6-months-stuff attitude anymore.

MUI for pOS? (15-Jan-97 )

pOS will be free for Freeware projects, according to C. Potter [I think he means the EPOS developer programme]. He also writes that he got a confirmation that MUI will be ported, but he adds that this isn't 100% sure, even though he got the information directly from proDAD.

QuikPak Amigas (12-Jan-97 )

QuikPak seems to be dedicated to the 680x0 and to DEC Alphas; according to an interview in Amiga Format. That way, low-end machines would only have a 680x0 whereas high-end Amigas would have both a 680x0 (for compatibility) and a DEC Alpha.

Apparently Fourth Level Developments is having problems with AFS. According to a recent post, they don't deliver what they promised. As it seems, development of new versions has been discarded and both Dave Haynie [Disksalv] and Holger Kruse [ReOrg] don't want to support it in their programs.

Gilles Bourdin vs. VIScorp (10-Jan-97 )

Gilles Bourdin doesn't like VIScorp, apparently. Speaking about the removal of most Amiga links at www.vistv.com, he says that he didn't expect something else from such a bunch of idiots ["bande de branleurs" in French].
He adds that the attitude of some people [at VIScorp] is not very wise; they don't realise that the computer sector is like a small family, where everybody knows everybody else; and that wrong decisions are not that easily forgot (especially when searching for a job).

Dr. Peter Kittel points out once again that the reasons why there is no AmigaOS port on the ONE are neither money nor time, but simply the lack of a licence. PIOS ONE News (07-Jan-97 )

Apparently, the PIOS One will be not just be an inexpensive PPC machine. Dr. Peter Kittel says it has some expensive features in its I/O design, has a non-standard form factor motherboard and thus needs expensive, custom casing. Also it's not easy to upgrade, you need a motherboard swap. These are the issues which have been taken care of in the PIOS ONE design.
He furthermore describes the PIOS ONE as quick, simple start, hinting that there may be a "TWO" later. He says that both PIOS and the users need something soon.
The ONE is expandable at large. You can have everything what you get now from an Amiga accelerator card, plus everything from the PCI (and ISA) world, drivers being the only problem.
He is also skeptical that Phase5's PowerUp program will be able to transform any A4000 into a generic PPC machine, he thinks that the PPC in that board will only act as coprocessor to the old 680x0.

In reply to an article suggesting to bypass [slow] accessing routines within the OS, Dr. Peter Kittel reminds every coder not to hack code for speed. This bypassing is never a good idea, it makes further development of an OS much too tricky. [..] The claim is that AmigaOS is clean in this regard, and this is counted as one reason for the stability and bug freeness of AmigaOS itself.

The Cybervision 64 [3D] is an excellent graphics card says Gert René Schmidt. On a 680060, a QuickTime under ShapeShifter in 1024x768 32768 colors is fluent, Photoshop is excellent, Lightwave 5 much faster.

New graphics package: DrawStudio (01-Jan-97 )

DrawStudio is the most significant graphics software for the Amiga since the first version of DPaint says Rod Fisher. He says he owns partically every graphics/animation package for the Amiga and several for Mac and PC, and that DrawStudio is super software.
