ce The object is simply to get as many points as you can. To get points, you have to hunt down and kill your assignment (another player). Along the way, you may encounter other players who you can snitch on to gain points. When you find your assignment, you kill them to gain some of their points. Before you kill your assignment you must go around the Motel and gather a weapon and matching defense then go hunt down a player you have been assigned to kill, and not get killed yourself. Sound simple enough? There are several factors that may work for or against you, like being killed yourself. ca You move around the Motel and surrounding areas by use of the directions north, south, east, west, up, and down. In your travels, you may find other players or items (such as weapons, supplies, or defenses). One of the players you might pass may be your assignment, the person you are supposed to find and kill. To kill your assignment, you must have a weapon and supply that works with that weapon. The following is a list of weapons and their accompanying supplies and defenses (guard against being killed with that weapon): cfWeapon Supply Defense cc------------- ---------------- ------------------ cbRevolver Revolver Bullets Bullet Proof Vest cdAxe Blade Axe Handle Police Shield cbSprayer Acid Acid Proof Suit cdShotgun Shotgun Bullets Shotgun Proof Vest cbSling Shot Rocks Trashcan Lid cdBeer Can Sand Quick Reflexes cbFlame Thrower Fuel Fire Extinguisher c9 For example, to kill Fred who has Bullet Proof Vest AND Quick Reflexes (two defenses), you must have an Axe Blade, Sprayer, Shotgun, Sling Shot, or Flame Thrower PLUS a supply to make that weapon work. ce When you first start out, you are allowed to carry two weapons, two supplies, and four defenses. ca Each new player gets 80 turns per day. A turn is moving either north, south, east, west, up, or down. Once you are out of turns, you must wait till the next day before you can play again. cb If you are attacked and killed by another player, all of the items you were carrying are dropped in the room you are in. If you are attacked and you defend against the attackers weapon (IE: Attacks with Revolver and you have a Bullet Proof Vest on), the attacker is thrown into a random room. cd If you are killed by someone, to play again, you must revive yourself, or restore yourself to a living state. This will cost you 25% of your points plus an additional five points in case you have no points. cf When you kill your assignment, you are awarded 50% of their points plus five additional points in case they have no points. This is the only time points are awarded. c9 Motel is not only a game of prededation, but it is also a game of survival. Whenever you are not playing, the player who is assigned to kill you might be playing, and might kill you. So when you quit playing, be sure you quit in a spot where it might be harder to find you. ca In Motel, you don't have to use your real name OR handle. You can choose another alias to use. Only you will know you use that alias, unless you tell someone. This adds a nice twist of anonimity to the game. cb Motel has what is called a wall, a place for people to leave messages for all other players to read. Here you might give away the whereabouts of a certain player, or you might elude other players by saying you are somewhere you are not. cd Motel has it's own mail system where you may send private one line messages to other players. ce In each room, you can post a message for the next person besides you who enters that room to read. It might be a hint, or just something funny. cf There is a log which has information about what different players have done while they played. It might help you find out if someone has been killed, or if they have played recently. c9 There is a top player list which displays the players in order of highest point totals. ca To see information about your player, you can view your status which includes information such as: your assignment, the number of turns you have left, the amount of turns per day you are allowed, your last play, the number of points you have, the number of players you have killed, the number of minutes you have been playing, and lists of any weapons, supplies, and defenses you might have. cb Once you become familiar with Motel, you may wish to view less information about every room. This is faster because less data is displayed everytime. The expert mode is a brief description of the room you are in. A verbose view can be done to view the room in whole. cd One little extra you might think handy is the ability to choose a set of keys to represent north, south, east, and west. If you have an ANSI terminal, you can use your cursor keys. If you have a numeric keypad, you can use those keys to move. Or, you can define the keys however you want. ce There are maps of each floor so you don't get too lost. Pressing return at the prompt for which floor will show you a map of the floor you are currently on. cf At any point, if you get confused, you can turn on the room IDs. This is an extra name for each room. Each room has an individual room ID, but some rooms may have the same room name. You must know the room ID if you are going to snitch on someone. The format is [floor]-[room #]. For example, room ID 2-1 would be the elevator for the second floor. Room ID 1-1 would be the Main Desk on the first floor. Fairly simple to understand. One small note, the visual maps only use the room names! c9 Here is a summary of commands available from the Main: prompt. ca Q - Quit Motel for the time being. To enter the Motel, you must press C to continue your game. Only after that can you move in directions, take/drop items, or attack your assignment. cd Each room may contain weapons, supplies, and/or defenses. You can take any item as long as you are in the same room as it, and you have enough free space to carry it. You can drop any item in the current room if you wish to make space for a new weapon. ce Motel 1.0 & 1.3 were originally written by Matt Brown(Frankie) for use on Amiga C-Net systems running at least version 2.42e. cf Motel 1.5 & 1.51 were still further modified to contain newer mci's, ibm character maps, and full colorization of the rest of the game, not to mention a SysOp Maintenance Menu by Dotoran, for CNet versions 2.63 thru 4.35 and beyond! ce Matt Brown(Frankie) can be reached on "Th' Ogre" at 417-725-3005. cf Dotoran can be reached by contacting "Frontiers" at 716-823-9892. ca Motel, Copyright 1990, Matt Brown(Frankie) Copyright 1993-1997, Dotoran cb All rights reserved.
