Special thanks 9. Contact Address INRODUCTION ~~~~~~~~~~~ VOTEX is a simple voting door for Daydream BBS. However, simple is an understatement here . VOTEX has been designed to provide both users and SysOps with more options than any other `standard' voting door. The reason for this door's existance is also very simple, I couldn't find any other good voting door for Daydream BBS on both the Aminet & all Daydream BBS links . Just to say that although you might find a few other voting doors for Daydream, what you might miss is that not all (if any) provide such options like the ones in VOTEX . INSTALLATION & SUBJECT CHANGING ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ To install VOTEX just copy all the files in this archive to your DOORS: directory and add a command to run VOTEX.dd as an Daydream ARexx door . If you don't know how then read the Daydream guide . Before you run VOTEX there are some modifications you have to make, else you could risk losing the entire package . Just modify this file : >> SUBJECT.SJT : The first line of this file should have the subject that you wish to negotiate and vote upon . Make sure your subject isn't more than 40 chars, else a bug uccurs ( Check Known Bugs ). Now, to know what the other files do ( Must read this ) ViA.DAT : Is a text file that records the `Views Against' ViF.DAT : Is a text file that records the `Views For' SYSOP.DAT : Is a text file with the SysOp's view VCount.DAT : Makes a record of the amount of votes ( For & Against ) VOTEA.DAT : Makes a list of the users that voted against the subject VOTEF.DAT : Makes a list of the users that voted for the subject When changing the subject there is a slight hassle you have to go through, it is the clearing and modification of these files . ViA.DAT : Should be cleared ( Empty ) ViF.DAT : Should also be cleared VCount.DAT : Should read one `0' on the first and second line VOTEA.DAT : Should be cleared VOTEF.DAT : Should also be cleared SUBJECT.SJT : Should have a new subject ( Obviously ) SYSOP.DAT : Should have the SysOp's new view I know that is a `slight' hassle, but please check the Next Versions & Known Bugs . USAGE & COMMANDS ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Using VOTEX when run is simple, you have 7 options : [ P ] Previous views [ S ] SysOp's view [ A ] Add a view [ V ] Vote [ C ] Count votes [ B ] About VOTEX [ Q ] Quit Previous view : Allows you to read other users' views, they are put in two sections, the FOR views, and the AGAINST views .. SysOp's view : Allows you to read what the SysOp thinks of the subject . Add a view : By choosing this you will be asked if your view is FOR or AGAINST . Choosing in accordance to your view ( Obviously ), you must include your handle so the rest of the voters can know that it was you who stated the view, to help negotiation . In the end your view will be added to the Previous Views . Vote : Choose to vote for or Against Count votes : Allows you to see who voted for and who voted against and the totals of each .. KNOWN BUGS ~~~~~~~~~~ After a long time of ALPHA & BETA testing I came out with a few bugs here and there .... 1. The user can vote for and against as may times as he/she likes ! 2. If your view was exactly the limit of chars you have been given then the view is put as `Wrong number of arguments' . 3. If someone disconnects while running the VOTEX you loose your VCOUNT.DAT file, thus when you rerun the door it will crash (couldn't find the VCOUNT.DAT file, fixing the problem could only be done manually, by counting the list of people that voted FOR and AGAINST and putting the number for the FOR voters as the first line, the second should have the number of AGAINST voters.. 4. It doesn't download the nude pixs ( Stupid! if you fell for it !) UPCOMING VERSIONS ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The new versions of VOTEX could and most probably would look completely different, the next version ( Probably v0.95 ) will fix the bug number 3. And 2., and will allow more chars for the views . Others will automatically record your handle and add it to the Views For, that is ofcorse when you include your view (iow. you don't have to include your handle after the view, thus will be done automatically). Also the fixing of the main bug number 1., and the possibility of ammending your views and changing your vote (though shall be limited to one time only), also uploading suggested subjects to negotiate . Ofcorse you can obtain these versions (FREE) directly from tha author .. AUTHOR ~~~~~~ I've tried always to make the best possible doors, however as the creation of such doors is time consuming and I also have to do some studying for school and all the like, I had to release the slightly incomplete versions of my doors, but as long as they function properly and are of good use, as for the mian problem (bug 1), it can also be a little more fun while having it, as you can do one of two things in such situations : 1. You will know who voted more than once and do have the ability to mess his account all over ! 2. You can change this door from a serious one to a VOTING MANIA ! I hope I do get feed back from this program, remember this program is mailware ! YOU MUST if you did ever use it email me or write me a letter, any reason for your letters will be appretiated, whether bug reports, suggetions, thank you notes, or just to make friends. All mail will be gladly accepted . BETA TESTERS REQUEST ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I already ALPHA test my programs, but I would like to have some BETA testers, no I won't pay anyone anything, BETA testing must be volentary, but you will benifit in two ways : 1. BETA testers get ALL the latest versions of ALL my doors 2. They get their names in the credits ( always ) If you want to be a BETA tester you must : 1 - Have a copy of Daydream BBS (preferably registered) 2 - Must be ready to fully test anything I give you 3 - Take responsability of any damage that might occur to your system, whatever it might be (iow. put your computer on the line for my stuff) 4 - You must actually send bug reports with thorough explanations, If you agree to these rules than contact me..
