Apollo 1240/40 test ] ]]ENTER]Apollo 1240/40 ]] In previous AD issue you can read test Apollo 1240/40 by AMI. However I would like to offer other glance. This board you can get in aesthetic, black box, Without any overprints (except main information overprint). Further more Elbox's pamphlet, user's manual & guarantee. Manual is in polish. You can find table of contents, but it has only 9 pages. First technical data (it's 68040 or 68060 with FPU & MMU - manual is the same for 68040 & 68060 boards). Next you can find information about SIMM socket (32 Mb Fast RAM or 64 Mb on 2 sockets & Tower). On board you can put 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, FPM or EDO SIMMs, without or with parity. It must be SIMM PS/2 72pin SIMMs. But unfortunately in my tower I haven't more place for second SIMM socket. In SCSI module is similar. So, some upgrades are BIG SOLDERING (& only in Elbox). In manual you can't find nothing about it. Apollo board looks 'normal' :). It has standard dimension. On board you can find clock, battery, SIMM socket & other things. From top you can see CPU from radiator & little 'windmill'. It is sufficed. Board you can put into expansion slot - you must use strength, but it isn't a problem. In Micronik Tower it fit ideal. Radiator is covered by power supply, but it not influences for refrigerating. With board you can't get 68040.library, but it isn't a problem, because this library you can find on system disks. But you must use library for your version of operating system. Verox send me 68040.library from KS3.1 (I've got 3.0) & speed of board decreased ~5 MIPS. In startup-sequence you must have SetPatch command, too. Jumpers. On board you can find 4 juympers. RAM - enable/disable memory, SCSI - enable SCSI controller autobooting, 060 - you must enable this jumper when you have 68060, CLK - choose CPU speed (for 68040 - '040', for 68060/50MHz - '060' & for 68060/66MHz - '040). On board you can see realtime clock. Now main part of this test. 1. Impressions 'at eye' System works faster, but not very fast. Here it's AGA chipset fault. GFX card recommended. I'm using DoublePAL mode. Directories reading is faster & you can see it explicit. Any operations in Directory Opus or File Master are faster, too. LHA, LZX & XPK works very fast. Sometimes you can't see what computer doing - copying, compressing/decompressing... Pictures... Here you can see what is 68040 explicit. JPEGs are reading like GIFs (a few seconds). But graphics applications (TrueBrillance 24bit, Personal Paint & Photogenics) aren't working too fast. But ArtEffect 1.5 loader works superb. Speed of 040 you can see at fractal generation - ChaosPro (shareware) is my favourite. Fractal generated on A1200 with 68882 33MHz in 3-5 minutes, now is generated in 15-20 seconds (!!!!!!). 2. Tests SyfInfo ... (oops) SysInfo. SysInfo in v3.24 shows that picture: P] So.. 30.2 MIPS, 7.67 MFlops, ~28000 DHrystones. CPU with 44 MHz, FPU, MMU.. NumberoUno :) AIBB - here we have more possibilities. Here you can see a few (first - A1200 + Apollo1240/40, second A1200 + 68882 33 MHz, code for 68000-nofpu, third A1200 + 68882 33 MHz, code for 68020+fpu, fourth A3000 25 MHz + 68882 synch, the last - A4000 25 MHz, code 040): EmuTest: P] WritePixel (here A1200 is the fastest): P] Dhrystone (this result is completely different than on SysInfo): P] Matrix: P] Savage: P] Flops: P] So, that it looks in 'eyes' testing applications. Apollo 1240/40 MHz accelaration board is interested: firstly Blizzards are for the moment withdrawed from market. For second price of Apollo with 68040 isn't excessive. For third short: why take pains? Final estimate: 8/10 points (Minuses for bad SIMM sockets disposition & other problems. About their I'll write in other article). ]ENTER]Marty/Taski
