BGFaye Yu is a young Chinese actress, best known to Americans for her
BGhighlight role in "The Joy Luck Club" as "Ying Ying", the young mother
BGwho drowns her baby after being betrayed by her husband.
BGShe was born in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, China.  The
BGdaughter of nuclear engineers, Faye was trained from age six
BGin Chinese Classical Dance. She enrolled in the Beijing Film
BGAcademy Acting Department in 1989.
BGWhile on vacation in Shanghai from the Academy she was
BGintroduced to Wayne Wang and "The Joy Luck Club" production
BGstaff, who were on a location scout. Although they had not
BGintended to cast anyone from mainland China, they were
BGimpressed by her talent, experience, and fresh good looks
BGand gave her the role of the most tragic character in the
BGfilm. The production brought her to the U.S. for the first
BGtime, because the role, although set in China, was shot in
BGentirely in San Francisco.  After "The Joy Luck Club" Faye appeared in
BGthe Hong Kong film "Tian Di" with star Andy Lau. She returned to Beijing
BGat the invitation of her school to become an Assistant Professor.
BGShe moved to Los Angeles in late 1994 to establish herself
BGfor work in English language Motion Pictures and Television.

BGBorn to Jewish parents in a Moscow suburb, Yuri Norstein painted as a
BGhobby and trained as a carpenter before studying animation.  He
BGdirected his first film in 1968 and made a series of short films
BGnotable for their attention to atmosphere and fine detail, using a
BGmultiplane camera to create the illusion of three-dimensional depth.
BGHis 1979 film, 'Tale of Tales' was acclaimed by a panel of
BGinternational animation experts as the best animated film of all time.
BGSince then, he has worked on an adaptation of Gogol's 'The Overcoat',
BGwhich has been beset by production and funding problems.
