BGVilma Banky appeared in Hungarian, Austrian and French movies between
BG1920 and 1925, the year in which Samuel Goldwyn signed her, in

BGVittorio De Sica grew up in Naples, and started out as an office clerk
BGin order to raise money to support his poor family.  He was
BGincreasingly drawn towards acting, and made his screen debut while
BGstill in his teens, joining a stage company in 1923.  By the late 1920s
BGhe was a successful matinee idol of the Italian theatre, and repeated
BGthat achievement in Italian films, mostly light comedies.  He turned to
BGdirecting in 1940, making comedies in a similar vein, but with his
BGfifth film 'The Children Are Watching Us' (1942), he revealed hitherto
BGunsuspected depths and an extraordinarily sensitive touch with actors,
BGespecially children.  It was also the first film he made with the
BGwriter Cesare Zavattini, with whom he would subsequently make
BG'Shoeshine' (1946) and 'Bicycle Thieves' (1948), heartbreaking studies
BGof poverty in postwar Italy which won special Oscars before the foreign
BGfilm category was officially established.  After the box-office
BGdisaster of 'Umberto D.' (1951), a relentlessly bleak study of the
BGproblems of old age, he returned to directing lighter work, BG: appearing
BGin front of the camera more frequently.  Although
BG'Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow' won him another Oscar, it BG: was
BGgenerally accepted that his career as one of the great
BGdirectors was over.  However, just before he died he made
BG'The Garden of the Finzi-Continis' (1971), a
BGpowerful study of anti-Semitism in Fascist Italy, which won him yet
BGanother Oscar, and his final film 'A Brief Vacation' (1973).  He died
BGfollowing the removal of a cyst from his lungs.

BG_Tombstone_. In July, 1994, it was announced that Kilmer would be taking
BGover the role of Batman/Bruce Wayne from Michael Keaton.

BGBorn in Russia in 1904, Lewton moved with his mother and sister
BGto Berlin in 1906, then to USA in 1909.  He wrote for newspapers,
BGmagazines, novels, pornography, etc.- often using pseudonyms to
BGdisguise their origin (the name Carlos Keith was one such
BGpseudonym, used first for some novels in the 1930's, then
BGrevived later in his career to take writing credit
BGfor two movies).  In 1933, he got a job with David O. Selznick,
BGwhere he spent many years as a story editor and jack-of-all-trades.
BGThen in 1942, RKO hired him to head their new horror unit, where
BGhe made many famous and well-respected B-movies, for very low
BGcosts and high profits. In 1946, he "graduated" to A-movies, but
BGincreasing health problems, trouble working with big-money
BGHollywood, and other factors combined to force him to produce
BGonly three more movies before his death in 1951.

BGVera-Ellen began dancing at the age of 10, and a few years later
BGbecame one of the youngest Rockettes.  She appeared in several

BGGoldwyn in 1945.  She was only 19 years old when Goldwyn cast her
BGopposite Danny Kaye in "Wonder Man".  She danced with Fred Astaire
BGin "Three Little Words" and with Gene Kelly in "On the Town".
BGBlonde, slim of build, and a dancing sensation, she appeared in a
BGstring of light-hearted but successful films.  Vera-Ellen retired
BGfrom acting in the late 1950s.
