March 30, 1995.    Subj:  A4000 Tower Upgrade


   After experiencing many problems with my Amiga 4000, I decided to install my motherboard inside a
large file-server tower.

   The upgrade was functional.  The original A4000 design offeres a poor power supply, little
expansion, and due to size constrains and poor engineering, does little to provide adequate cooling
for the on-board components.

   Thus, with a little study of some local manufacturers of large tower cases, I purchased a
file-server tower and did the necessary hacking (literally!) to fit the original A4000 motherboard
inside.  I then added 3 harddrives (2 IDE, 1 SCSI-2) giving me 2.3 gigabytes of file storarge, a
MacroSystems Warp Engine with a 40 Mhz 68040, 21 megabytes of fast ram, a Video Toaster 4000 card,
a TBC IV, a Personal Animation Recorder, and finally, a Hydra Ethernet card for connecting the whole
thing to my ShaBLAMM! workstation (also in the photos alonside with my A2000/040).

   Take a look at the photos.  It works well now, never getting too hot, despite the number of
components attached to the motherboard.  I also included a shot of the rear, showing how the I/O
connections fit exactly into the host tower.
