jpegAGA 1.1 update by Günther Röhrich ************************************* This is a small add-on to jpegAGA 1.1. There is no new version because the old one seems to be stable and it will take some time till jpegAGA 2.0 will be released. What is this update for, you may ask. With the shell-script "CreateMapBig" mapfile creation is much faster. But you will need the program djpeg from the IJG JPEG V5 distribution. While decoding the picture it will be scaled down by 1/2. This does no harm (at least for large pictures) because only the color distribution is of interest and not the whole picture. For very big pictures you may even scale by 1/4, you will have to edit the script a bit. For small pictures (e.g. 320x200 pixels) you should not reduce the size and use the normal "CreateMap" script. It is also recommended for use if you are processing a complete directory with both big and small pictures. File names with spaces are now also supported. Workbench users can now use the enclosed script "jpegAGA_WB". To show a picture click once on the jpegAGA_WB icon, hold down the shift key and double-click on the desired picture. If you simply double-click on jpegAGA_WB you can choose your picture with the directory and file requesters. It is recommended to edit the file jpegAGA_WB with a text editor and add your prefered options to the lines where jpegAGA is invoked. The skript is also sort of localized but now only English and German is supported. If you add another language then please send me your script. The script was made with the help of Todd C. Reddy, thank you very much! For the icons I have to thank Martin Huttenloher, I don't have any talent at all for painting. If you don't have or don't like the MagicWB you have to look for other icons. In the Prefs directory you can find suitable color palettes for use with the program "Palette". I also should mention that the ixemul.library that is included in the jpegAGA 1.1 archive contains a bug. It does not work on systems without a FPU. There is a new version on Aminet (40.04) with this bug fixed. Here is where you can get all the other programs and libraries that are included in the jpegAGA archive. If you can find new versions in other places you should use them, don't wait till they will appear in the jpegAGA archive! Actual situation: (11-December-1994) ixemul.library ************** Included in the jpegAGA 1.1 archive: version 40.3, 68020, noFPU (does not work without a FPU because of a bug) Latest version: 40.4 Archive location (on Aminet): dev/gcc/ixem404lib.lha djpeg, cjpeg ************ Included in the jpegAGA 1.1 archive: V4 Latest version: V5 (supports scaling, is slightly faster) Archive location (on Aminet): gfx/conv/jpegV5bin.lha gfx/conv/jpegV5src.lha If you have any comments, suggestions, bug reports, etc then please contact me: electronic mail: normal mail: **************** ************ Guenther@studbox.uni-stuttgart.de Günther Röhrich (Internet EMAIL) Lerchenbergstr. 4 73733 Esslingen Germany Announcement: jpegAGA 2.0 ************************* It will (hopefully) have the following new features: - based on the JPEG V5 source written by the Independent JPEG Group (instead of V4) - slightly faster - very fast preview (at reduced size) in just a few seconds, similar to the program "qpeg" for PC's - picture will be centered on the screen - downscaling by a factor 1/2, 1/4 and 1/8 is possible - comments contained in some JPEG pictures can be shown - comments in JPEG pictures can be used to store the informations from the mapfiles, you will not need an additional file any more (this is, of course, 100% compatible to other programs) - while a picture is completely shown another one can be loaded and decoded in the background, no silly waiting any more - display in the 256 colors colormapped mode, maybe also in a window on the Workbench screen If you have other suggestions then please let me know about them. If it does not make too much work or if many users want to have it I will try to implement them in the program. I am also still searching for beta-testers and other developers to help me. P.S: At this time first beta releases of jpegAGA 2.0 are available. If you want to have them for testing then please contact me. Don't be scared, my beta releases are running much more stable than some "final releases" of other programs you can find on Aminet. Shipment via EMAIL is free of cost. If you want them via normal mail then please keep in mind that the German post is one of the most expensive in the world. You have to send me money or gifts for the costs I will have. If the program is finished I will upload it as PD on Aminet, including the source. I don't plan to upload any beta releases.
