@NODE Iconify
DreamTerm will always close window when you press iconify but serial will remain active if you have called bbs and modem is still online. Note that custom screen is not closed because MUI will close/open window before notifying program about user action. And as you can imagine system do not like windows to open on non-exist screen... This is not actually bug in MUI but I can say that it is little bit annoying.
@ENDNODE

@NODE Emulations
ANSI/VT102

Internal ANSI emulation with some VT102 commands, will work with majority of bbs systems. Is also fast as everything is written in asm, just compare how much slower xemibm is using DirectPrint.

Use XEm VT340 if you need full DEC-VT emulation.

HEX

Translates incoming chars to hex, may be some use if you need to know what you really receive.

XEm

Unfortunately you cannot use external emulations with hardware screen. Configuration is also little bit complicated because xem specs do not say anything about colors/pens. Due that DreamTerm's xem implementation will always use first 8 colors which you can specify if you use custom screen but not when Workbench screen is used. So you lose flexibility of automatic pen allocation. Note that incoming char conversion is disabled but output (keyboard/send ascii) is still on. It is also possible that xem will not use font which is specified in charset. Another thing is that sometimes whole screen/window is not used, this is due the problem that DreamTerm cannot know which font xem will use and thus size is mostly wrong if you use other than 8x8 fonts.

Tech: I could use XEmulatorInfo() but it has only console size, probably author expected that everybody uses 8x8 fonts forever. :)

When you change xem library version you should reconfigure emulation because old options may be changed. First use reset button and after that change options, otherwise library may get confused. For interested this is due the fact that DreamTerm will keep xem configuration files within its own config files and extract them when needed using XEmulatorPreferences() command. Unfortunately most xem libraries do not support load option and thus it has no use to change xem options in configuration window. (xemascii works:-)

Well, I personally feel that xem documentation was crap, it also contained some errors and differences between includes, sources and examples...

Notes about different xem libraries:

Comparison between DreamTerm's internal ansi emulation and xem ansi
emulations using A1200 with real fastram.

1798877 bytes long ansi animation (no scrolling), 640x256x16 (80x25) screen without statusline, priority 3.

          | hardware scr |              |
Emulation | secs ( cps ) | secs ( cps ) | note
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
ANSI/VT102: 1.08 (26454) | 1.27 (20676) |  8 colors, pcansi off, strip off
ANSI/VT102: 1.08 (26454) | 1.22 (21937) |  8 colors, pcansi off, strip on
ANSI/VT102: 1.09 (26070) | 1.23 (21673) | 16 colors, pcansi on
XEM bbs   :              | 4.43 ( 6356) |  8 colors (3.4 times slower)
XEM ibm   :              | 4.04 ( 7372) |  8 colors (2.9 times slower)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
(colors = how many colors emulation uses)

Actual speed may seem high enough as with v32bis modems you mostly receive about 3000 chars in second. Well, you should remember that real speed goes down as you use bigger/deeper screen, capture, review etc.

@ENDNODE

@NODE Cryptology
Before using phonebook crypting read this carefully, you also should read documents of library which you plan to use. And if you really are interested about security, crypting, politics, patents etc. you may want to read PGP documentation.

Saving

DreamTerm will first save phonebook without crypting to its temporary directory and then crypt it using some xpk library, after that non-crypted file will be overwritten and deleted. This is little bit risky as some fragments may be left in disk, so ideally tempdir should be ram:. Crypt mode will also delete name, phone, password and function keys from current settings before saving them. Logfile is not automatically disabled as someone might want to use it.

Loading

Generally same as saving. Note that password is NOT checked and so phonebook loading may fail without warning if password is wrong.

General

You must not use ENCO library as it is very unsafe! I advice you to use IDEA.100 which probably is the best algorithm available on Amiga (and xpk).

In some countries it could be crime to keep your privacy as government may want to have total control over you.

There is no explanation for menuitems which can be changed in phonebook entries as those just change current settings and are overrided after dialing. So only some kind of action items and enviroment settings are explained.

NOTE: Do not use 'multiselect', due my laziness it will not work correctly.

@NODE "Introduction

Welcome to DreamTerm, advanced and flexible telecommunication tool for Amiga personal computer system.

Features

o Hardware screen & serial for those who want maximum speed.
o Xpr 2.0 and 2.001 support, no internal protocols at all.
o XEm 2.0 support for possibility to add new emulations without upgrading
  main file.
o Internal Ansi/VT102 emulation for use with bbs systems, very fast.
o Prescroll to speedup scrolling
o Phonebook entry count limited only by available memory
o Possibility to crypt phonebook using Xpk libraries.
o Most options can be configured individually for every phonebook entry.
o Pickup table for sharing options between different phonebook entries.
o Uses MUI for windows allowing user (you!) to configure interface look.
o Console can use any fixed size font.
o Screenmode support.
o Realtime input/output conversion.

Missing features

DreamTerm is still in development and due that some features are not yet ready, however those are not used very often if ever and should not create problems.

@NODE Requirements

Amiga                A500-A4000T
KickStart            3.0 or newer
Magic User Interface 2.1 or newer
ReqTools library     2.0 or newer
Motorola           68000 or newer

Requirements may seem to be little bit too high and I am first to admit that everything could be done with older software/hardware. However I want to use new routines and I'm absolutely too lazy to code any kludges to somehow make it work with KS2.0. And because this is not shareware project there is no point to reach every paying user. Well, if there is any... :)

         string.
(BUGFIX) I experienced some mysterious crashes with large droplist but this
         version seems to be working, not actually sure if I fixed it...

@{b}V1.3 : 20-Feb-94 (sort of panic version)@{ub}

(ADDED ) Different sort categories in phonebook.
(BETTER) Now using MUI 2.0.
(BETTER) Multitasks better, previous versions used something like 'sliced'
         CPU which leaded to massive CPU usage...
(BUGFIX) MUI images/background changed colors after changing screen depth
         (or pens). This is __MUI__ bug but fortunately I found a way to
         correct this.
(BUGFIX) ANSI cursor save/recall was not recalling cursor position more
         than once.
(BUGFIX) In 2-8 color screen it was hard to read some requester texts
         because they used background color... :)
(BUGFIX) Droplist compare was not working fully.
(BUGFIX) Some gadgets were not in MUI tabcycle.

V1.2 : 12-Feb-94

*** Improvements

- ANSI/HEX pen color editing

- Better custom screen color handling

- DTR hangup and initstring

- Info clear in phonebook

- Comparing phone number against droplist uses now only numbers

*** Fixed bugs

- Charset/Protocol lists weren't sorted in menus

- Shell window using ISO trashed after quitting DTerm

- Minimal transfer status completion % was broken

- Pick table set/clear was still crap... <sigh> should work <sigh>

- <->Beta text was still in status line

V1.1 : 13-Jan-94

*** Improvements

- More informative phonebook directory (Last call date/cost/calls/time).

- Clone create new entry for phonebook.

- Dialer now uses selection order.

- Possibility to use double buffering with any protocol.

*** Fixed bugs

- Pick table set/clear was not working properly (only strings).

- If there wasn't enough colors in Wb screen some colors(pens) were
  drawed with background color (hard to read I think:-).

- With hardware screen other than 8x8 charsets were selectable from menus.

- Normal serial wasn't handling CTS.

- Serial throughput wasn't optimal.

- Send Ascii failed sometimes.

- Logfile avr. cps was sometimes messed up.

- Priority handling & dial number was forgotten... :)

- If using some background images in MUI then custom screen colors changed
  if keep wb was off.

- If screen open failed program exited (now tries to open in Wb screen).

+ some minor bugs/misfeatures...

V1.0C: 13-Dec-93

Well, I was expecting this...

- Blue color was white in ansi-emulation if normal screen was on and
  keep wb off.

- Upload wasn't working very good (stupid serial bug).

- ZModem initstring was wrong: OR (resume) should be OY (overwrite)!

V1.0 : 12-Dec-93

Changes

- Code now requires KickStart3.0/MUI/68000.

- GUI and some other parts are now written in C. All time critical
  routines are still 68000 assembly.

- New config/phonebook format.

Improvements

- Screen: height can be changed (1-x lines), scrolling is faster, not
              anymore system copperhack which is too unreliable to use
              with AGA machines. (I think that commodore has promised not
              to change OCS/ECS registers...) Also normal system screen
              added.

- ANSI/VT102: Some sequences added.

- GUI: now coded with C, loads of new features added.

+ numerous changes and improvements (and bugs).

                       use it but it seems that this is only one which is
                       actually installed it. I don't know why as every

                       least in one way transfer and it cannot hurt that
                       TechnoBBS also supports bidirectional transfer.)

Don't expect to see my messages there, I'm very lazy message writer and mostly file freak;-)

@NODE Discussion

@{b}Why DreamTerm do not support Remote Imaging Protocol?@{ub}

It is too 'heavy' protocol, I mean that it has TOO much commands to do simple things and it is also designed PC (yäk) machines in mind.

@{b}Why system screen is so slow sometimes?@{ub}

You may notice how char print speed varies, especially when BBS sends megs of those ANSI menus. This is mostly system's fault which is somewhat slow changing colors/positions (they are changed lot in those ANSI drawings).
Hardware screen is more than adequate work-around if you don't own one of those fancy and expensive graphics cards. With A1200/A4000 it probably can print much more chars in second than serial port is capable receiving. Remember that with old chipset you cannot use 16-color screen, use 8-color screen instead. If you have A1200/A4000 put 'Enable AGA Burst' on and you have 2x bandwidth which offers possibility to use 16-color hardware screen with any DTE. This switch is there because there is no official information about AGA and how to enable 2x/4x bandwidth modes.

@{b}When to use internal ANSI and when XEM@{ub}

Use XEM only if you really need VT320 emulation, currently all other libraries are worthless junk. Also some problems may appear due XEM limitations but I have tried to make it as flexible as possible. Well, I'll try to reach XEM designer and discuss if some new features could be added, like smart color pen definition which would allow nice Workbench use.

Why DTerm is free?

Because I trust YOU to send me nice gift... Well, it may be that this is last free version and I'm going to shareware but nothing is decided yet.

Q: Why MUI window font sometimes is reduced to unreadable size?

A: Your probably opened window on tiny screen, minimum size where all windows are designed to work is 640x200. There is of course MUI bug/feature which do not recalculate the font for other windows if it was minimized for some other window.

@NODE Terminology

@{b}Enviroment setting@{ub}

Options which cannot be configured from phonebook entry. I created these because there are some options which make no sense to be configurable from every entry. Anyway, if you feel that some of them should be moved to entry then let me know and I might do it.

@{b}Pick table@{ub}

To avoid 'configurable = configure everything' effect there is so called pick table which is used to share settings between phonebook entries. It simply means that you can select for every phonebook entry which settings are copied from pick table. Generally you should try to use it as much as possible and use local values only for phone numbers, passwords etc. If you do so it will be much easier to change some setting only from pick table when needed. In elsewhere this product I will call option which is picked from table as global.
(Every time when I add new options they will be in global state in old phonebook entries.)
