Some programs already exist (ID, WhatIs, etc.) doing that job. But other programmers can't use it's services for their own programs. This is the goal of FileID.library. WhatIs.library shows up a way. But the only library version I ever saw, just knows approx. 20 different file types and the descriptions are too short, I think. No one (including the author itself) seems to expand the library brain file. The WhatIs_brain_file idea is very good, of course. But I don't think about doing the same. I'll expand the library myself, trying to hold a maximum library speed. FileID.library was written in highly optimized assembly code. A user brain file version couldn't reach that high speeds. If you want FileID.library to identify your favourite/special file types, just contact me and send me some example files and, if possible, include some informations about how these files can be identified. Note that FileID.library won't ever identify viruses. For virus hunting, please use a good virus killer, like VT or VirusWorkShop. Those programs do this job much better and safer. It will be much more work to hunt and kill viruses in a really safe manner. This would only explode the library size. Also, I really don't feel like collecting and reassembling hundreds of viruses. This is a life-time job, and I really have other things to do. Don't lay any bets on the results of a FileID analysis. If your textfile begins with the words: "DMS! -A standard Amiga disk packer...", FileID will tell you that the file was a DMS archive, because the first four bytes equal "DMS!"... Some file types can't be safely identified, like some system files (libs, devs etc.). For example, a keymap starts with a DOS hunk header, followed by a node structure. Unfortunately, no LN_TYPE was defined for keymap nodes. FileID.library can only guess sometimes... FileID identifies more file types than any other "WhatIs"-like program I currently know. The memory usage is very low. Only the small size of the library plus max. 1460 bytes for a file buffer. The stack consumption is low, too (less than 100 bytes anyway, excluding AmigaDOS file I/O). FileID.library runs on every Amiga without any system requirements and doesn't need any external data (like libraries) to run. @endnode @node Installation "FileID.library: Installation" @next Copyright @prev WhatIsIt The Installation is very easy. Copy FileID.library to LIBS: -that's all. FileID.library comes up with english identification strings and error messages. You may easily change this by copying your favourite locale catalog into your LOCALE: directory (currently there's only a german catalog included). Workbench 2.1 must be installed to use locale files, so you won't find the locale.library in the FileID archive. Note that if you have installed any FileID catalog, the file identification will take more time then. If not, you won't notice any speed changes to previous library versions. If the locale catalog is installed and FileID.library still returns english texts, you should try to flush the library out of your memory. (Use "Avail FLUSH" or the "Flush" command to to this). If some program still has got the library open, it can't be removed from the system. Then you must reset your Amiga. This is because FileID.library tries to open it's locale catalog only once at the library init. All the other Stuff is less important. If you are a programmer, you'll know which files to copy and what of the stuff to delete. The only useful thing for normal users is the small "WhatIs" application. This CLI-only-Program does just what it's name says. It may be freely distributed and freely used with any program (if you get rich with a program using my library, you might send me some money :^) . This excludes PD dealers. Developers: you don't have to include the whole FileID archive when spreading your program. I only recommend that you include the library and it's locale catalogs.
