The entire credit for this must go to the folks at LSD, particularly Shagratt who took my very "fuzzy ideas" and coded them into a solidly working util which everyone can NOW use. W H A T D O E S I T D O ? CLI/SHELL Usage: Merely tell it: Checkexe . Checkexe will then happily go about checking the structures to see if it is really a "exe" command, show you all the HUNKS, tell you what kind of memory requirements are needed, and then report if the file is OK. Here is an example of it checking ITSELF: checkexe Executable Hunk Checker v 1.0ß - Written by Shagratt/LSD PROGRAM IS PACKED WITH "CrunchMania R/N/[H]" CHECKING HUNKS.. Hunk_Header ($3f3)....... Hunk_Code ($3e9).... Hunk_Reloc32 ($3ec)....... Hunk_End ($3f2).. Hunk_BSS ($3eb).... Memory usage: Chipmem: 0k Publicmem: 6k Fastmem: 0k FILE OK BBS USAGE: Checkexe can be used with Ami-Express/Tempest/C-Net/XenoLing (in fact any BBS software!) as is. I am most familiar with Ami-Express and its "FCcheck" and will use this as an example how it works; CD BBS:FCheck = EXE checkexe ; This is LINE #1, or your ; BLANK...LINE 2, or your Sorry...NONE YET! CHECK FAILED - NO HUNK HEADER ;LINES # 3 - ??? Error warnings CHECK FAILED - BAD HUNK STRUCTURE WARNING: Program needs FASTMEM WARNING: Program needs 1MB of CHIPMEM WARNING: Program needs over 1MB of memory WARNING: Program will have CHIPMEM problems, kill all externals ****NOTE**** Lines 5-8 are "Optionals", but I suggest you use and force such files to your HOLD DIR so you can add such "Warnings" to the file descriptions. ======================================================================= Again, CHECKEXE is for use with ".exe" commands. These are commands which will execute, or "run" on your system. Files such as texts, docs, .dms files or others ARE NOT EXECUTABLE. ****PAY ATTENTION TO ME PLEASE**** "What is an executable?" Many people are "confused" about what IS/IS NOT considered "exe". Most folks consider only their commands in the C:, SYSTEM:, or TOOLS: directories as executables. These are files which you can either enter their names from a CLI/SHELL or run clicking on their associated icons. THESE ARE NOT *ALL* the types of "executables" which exist! The following are other types of files which Amiga DOS considers "executable", although not 'all possibilities': LIBS: - libraries such as: decrunch.library L: - handlers such as: aux-handler REXX: - compiled RPSTART REXX such as: DCI "Door" for Ami-Express 'Rule of Thumb'....."compiled" files may/may not be 'executable' .....file not compiled MAY NOT (normally) be! COMPRESSED FILES: Checkexe makes use of the DECRUNCH.LIBRARY! If a file has been compressed with any known "cruncher", checkexe will report the type of compression as was shown above in the CLI/SHELL example. This is a bonus feature which Shagratt added to help everyone identify all types of files, so they can be "uncrunched" with DLD in case you have specific problems. NOTE: If you do not wish to use this option, do not have decrunch.library in your libs: directory. CHECKEXE will still work correctly, but without this option! MEMORY USAGE: Another useful feature is the report on memory usage, eg; Memory usage: Chipmem: 604k Publicmem: 12k Fastmem: 0k This report tells us that the .exe file it has just checked needs 1meg of CHIP memory to be executed. A useful feature i`m sure you`ll agree! WHAT IT CAN`T DO: If a file has been passed by CHECKEXE, there is still a chance it will not work. Sadly there is no way to detect bad programming! DOCUMENTATION/TESTING This documentation was written by "Doc", Doc's House from notes given me in "ßeta" directly from Shagratt with his permission to write them during testing. "BLATANT ADVERTISING"--- Doc's House +1 614-855-3114, is a special BBS system to assist Sysops, PR Groups, and Programmers. We are specialists in DESIGN/DEVELOPMENT/TESTING. If you ever want an great util idea to work on, "Free" help with DESIGNS/DEVELOPMENT, or a good forum to release quality utils that will give them good descriptions and PUBLICITY.........give us a call. Ohhhh....and a phone call to support people such as the LSD Group, Shagratt, and others who spend COUNTLESS HOURS slaving in the micro-world of "bytes" and "bug-reports" bringing you these utils to express your thanks is VERY APPRECIATED! IMPORTANT MESSAGE: Because of online checking, the executable file MUST have the suffix ".exe", so if you release a production onto the boards, PLEASE ENSURE it has this suffix (eg; "LSD-lard.exe" "TSL-cool.exe", "ASI-hot.exe" etc.). SYSOPS PLEASE ENFORCE THIS IF YOU ARE TO USE THIS CHECKER!
