ICNView 1.0 (June 17, 1994) FREELY DISTRIBUTABLE Copyright © 1994 All Rights Reserved by Michael Nelson ICNView is a little program used for viewing the RIP ICN files from a CLI or directory utility. If you don't have any ICN files or even know what RIP is then chances are you'll find this program of little use. I'll quickly explain RIP in case you haven't heard of it before. RIP is an acronym for Remote Imaging Protocol, this allows TERMINAL programs to call up a BBS and get HIRES graphics and other neat things displayed on screen. RIP ICoN's are just one small part of RIP, with which the sysop of a bbs can write a script (RIPscrip) to call up the ICN off of the users harddrive and stamp it onscreen (for show or as an interactive button). If you'd like to find out more about RIP give my bbs a call at 1-(519)-542-6788 (v.32bis) and check out the various RIP programs I wrote called RIPGRAF, which is used for creating RIPscrip files, and RIPcomm, used for calling up BBS which support RIP (like my BBS). Usage ~~~~~ ICNView works from the CLI... and will work in a properly configured directory utility (see below for instructions). It can be used to display a single ICN file using it like this; 1.Ram Disk:> run icnview boing2.icn or display several ICN files one at a time using like this; 1.Ram Disk:> run icnview boing2.icn visa.icn ufo.icn as well you can use Amigados file name patterns and wildcards like so; 1.Ram Disk:> run icnview DH0:these/#?.icn DH0:those/#?.icn The ICN's will be displayed centered on a custom screen (which opens using the default monitor type on your system). You can click the mouse button(s) or press any key to move from one ICN to the next (if you used multiple files or wildcards in the command line) and will exit when you hit ESCAPE or there are no more ICN's to be displayed. Configuring a directory utility (DU). ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ One caveat of this program (and one that can't be fixed) is that the RIP ICN's have no identifying bits within them, as they are basically just raw bitmaps. The filename extension is your only clue. This prevents the DU from determining what the file is by searching through the first few bytes of an ICN file and launching ICNView. Distribution ~~~~~~~~~~~~ This program is freeware. It is not public domain, and it is copyrighted. It may not be included or used with any commercial program without my consent. It may be included with any library disk or CD with or without my knowledge as long as no unreasonable fee is asked. Sean was one of the first few people to register my RIPGRAF program, if not for that I probably would've told him to p*ss off and program it himself. ;-) Thanks also go (I guess) to Telegrafix for coming up with this funky protocol in the first place... they got MUCH better things in store but we have to wait. RIP 2.0 will support higher resolutions and with more than 16 colors... I've seen a screen cap of RIPTERM running on a 640*480 SVGA screen with 256 colors displaying a 1/4 screen JPEG image. Neat.
