Archie is an internet search tool that locates files stored at FTP sites around the world. You give it it's instructions and it looks for the files you want.

I wrote Archie_Gui mainly because I saw pictures in magazines of archie clients for the Mac and saw how easy to use they were.
The standard amiga client required you to enter several command line options and was not therefore very user friendly.
Archie_Gui gives Archie a graphical, easier to use interface.

Firstly type Archie_GUI.exe at a shell prompt or select the archie option from AmiTCP Control Panel.

The following options are then available.

You must remember to press return when you have entered text into entry requesters such as Search Text, Archie Server and Matches, otherwise your entry will not be recognised.
When you have done this press @{"Start Search" link start} to start the search or press @{"Cancel" link how} to cancel.

This is the archie server archie will search to find your required search text, the default of archie.doc.ic.ac.uk should be appropriate for most searches. 
You can however change the address by clicking in the text entry box next to the words "Archie Server" and then entering the required servers name. You must then hit the return key for the change to be recognised.

This is the most important part, choosing what to search for. Click in the text entry box next to the words "Search Text", enter the text to search for and then press return. This text will be acted upon by the Case Sensitive and Sub String gadgets.

If "Case Sensitive" is highlighted Archie will check the search text, and only show matches where the text is in the same case as that entered. i.e. if you enter "Water", it will find "Water" but not "water".

If "Sub String" is Highlighted Archie will look for any occurences of that string in the names of files i.e. if you enter "water" it could find "waterworks", "Waterford" or "water", it would not find "westsuit"! If "Sub String" is off entering water 
will only find the files which are called exactly "water" it would not find "waters".

The "Matches" option determines the maximum number of files Archie will find. The default is 95 and this will be more than adequate for most people. If you are pretty certain of the file you are looking for it is 
probably best to change this value to a lower value. You can change the value by clicking in the entry box next to the word "Matches" and changing the number, remembering to press return to save the changes.

Now that you have set the options you must now tell archie to get to work, you do this by clicking on the button "Search Text", if you wish to cancel the search just press @{"Cancel" link start}.

Archie_Gui Won't Work :-(

Are you connected? If you have not connected with AmiTCP (using slip), you will get a message saying you have not connected. If you have connected but still get this message please E-Mail me and I will send you a version without
connection detection.

Other Problems

Try using Archie by the old CLI method, does this work? If not it's Archie's fault not mine. If Archie works by using CLI and not by GUI send me a note explaining what the problem is.

This product has not been fully tested by myself, mainly due to no local POP, and as a student I can't afford large phone bills, you are in fact helping test this utility. I can see no way that it can cause any damage to your setup, but 
don't moan to me if it does because I accept no liability.
