Analogue Joystick to Amiga

This page contains all the information you need to connect a PC Analogue Joystick to a Amiga. Note the software has to support analogue joysticks for this to work, examples of games that do (and to good effect) are Formula 1 Grand Prix and Gunship 2000 (Microprose).

The PC Joystick should have a 15 pin normal-density male D-type connenctor. This needs to be cut down to a maximum of 9 signals so you can wire it into a female 9-pin D-type connector, which will go into the Amiga port. You have two options now, either cut the 15-pin off and solder a 9-pin on, or make a connector cable to convert them. I recommend the latter, as it allows you to use the joystick on a PC still (Hey, you might sell it or something :)). Also it's less of a worry if you get muddled and want to start again. But if you do decide to go the other way, make sure you note the wire colours-pin combinations down! This will tell you which wire is which after the connector is gone. Here are the pinouts:

         9-pin Male 15-pin female

             3 2
             4 7
             5 6
             7 1
             8 4
             9 3

These are of course the pin numbers on the actual hardware (machine/joystick), but most connectors are reversed-numbered so when you look from the back of the connector, you will get the right numbers. Just in case, here are the pinouts of the connectors you need to solder up, looking from the back (i.e. solder side):

Now just solder up those conenction, it doesn't really matter what cable you use since there are no high-speed tranfers going on, but it should be flexible, preferably single-core. Bingo!
