Christian bishop, one of the originators of
the Monophysite heresy. As patriarch of
Antioch (from 512), Severus was the leader of
opposition to the Council of Chalcedon 451,
an attempt to unite factions of the early
church, by insisting that Christ existed in
one nature only. He was condemned by the
emperor Justin I in 518, and left Antioch for
Alexandria, never to return.
