Town in Kazakh Republic, USSR, on the river
Irtysh; population (1987) 330,000. It was
founded 1718 as a Russian frontier post and
moved to its present site 1776. Industries
include meat-packing, tanning, and
flour-milling, and the region produces nickel
and chromium. The Kyzyl Kum
atomic-weapon-testing ground is nearby.
