Site of a nuclear power station on the coast
of Cumbria, NW England. It was known as
Windscale until 1971, when the management of
the site was transferred from the UK Atomic
Energy Authority to British Nuclear Fuels
Ltd. The plant is the world's greatest
discharger of radioactive waste: between 1968
and 1979 180 kg of plutonium was discharged
into the Irish Sea. In 1990 a scientific
study revealed an increased risk of leukemia
in children whose fathers worked at
Sellafield from 1950 to 1985.
