Town in Castilla-Leon, central Spain;
population (1981) 50,760. Thread, fertilizer,
and chemicals are produced. It has a Roman
aqueduct with 118 arches in current use, and
the Moorish alcazar (fortress) was the palace
of the monarchs of Castile. Isabella of
Castile was crowned here 1474.
