Northern suburb of Hyderabad city, Andhra Pradesh, India, separated from the rest of the city by the Hussain Sagar lake; population (1981) 144,287. Formerly a separate town, it was founded as a British army cantonment, with a parade ground where 7,000 troops could be exercised. It was by experiments at Secunderabad that Ronald Ross established that malaria is carried by the anopheles mosquito.
