Italian painter, born in Venice, one of the
great painters of the High Renaissance.
Sebastiano was a pupil of Giorgione and
developed a similar style of painting. In
1511 he moved to Rome, where his friendship
with Michelangelo (and rivalry with Raphael)
inspired him to his greatest works, such as
The Raising of Lazarus 1517-19 (National
Gallery, London). He also painted powerful
portraits.
