John T Scopes, a science teacher at the high
(secondary) school, was accused of teaching,
contrary to a law of the state, Darwin's
theory of evolution. He was fined $100, but
this was waived on a technical point. The
defence counsel was Clarence Darrow and the
prosecutor William Jennings Bryan.
