In 1946 it was joined to the former Prussian province of Saxony as a region of East Germany and in 1952 it was divided into the districts of Halle and Magdeburg. Following the reunification of Germany in 1990, Saxony-Anhalt was reconstituted as one of the five new Lander of the Federal Republic.
