Port and holiday resort in Florida, USA;
population (1980) 12,000. Founded by the
Spanish 1565, and the oldest permanent
settlement in the US, it was burned by the
English sea captain Drake 1586 and ceded to
the USA 1821. It includes the oldest house
(late 16th century) and oldest masonry fort,
(Castillo de San Marcos 1672) in the
continental USA.
