German `storm and stress'. German early
Romantic movement in literature and music,
from about 1775, concerned with the depiction
of extravagant passions. Writers associated
with the movement include Herder, Goethe, and
Schiller. The name is taken from a play by
Friedrich von Klinger 1776.
