City in Staffordshire, England, on the river Trent; population (1981) 253,000. It is the heart of the Potteries and a major ceramic centre. Other industries include steel, chemicals, engineering machinery, paper, rubber, and coal. Stoke was formed 1910 from Burslem, Hanley, Longton, Stoke-upon-Trent, Fenton, and Tunstall. The ceramics factories of Minton and Wedgwood are here. The Gladstone Pottery Museum is the only working pottery museum.
