Theory that the universe is in a steady
state: it appears the same wherever (and
whenever) viewed. This seems to be refuted by
the existence of cosmic background radiation,
however. Held by Charles Lyell, among others,
the theory was revived 1948 by Hermann Bondi,
Thomas Gold, and Fred Hoyle.
