A method of writing numbers often used by
scientists, particularly for very large or
very small numbers. The numbers are written
with one digit before the decimal point and
multiplied by a power of 10. The number of
digits given after the decimal point depends
on the accuracy required. For example, the
speed of light is 2.9979 x 10^8 metres per
second.
