Town on the river Somme, Picardie, N France;
population (1985) 69,000. It was the site of
a Prussian defeat of the French 1871 and was
almost obliterated in World War I. It is
linked by canal to the industrial centres of
Belgium and West Germany. Its traditional
textile production has been replaced by
chemicals and metalworks.
