Group of barren, uninhabited islands in
British Antarctic Territory, SE of Cape Horn;
area 622 sq km/240 sq mi. They were
discovered by the naval explorer Capt George
Powell 1821. Argentina, which lays claim to
the islands, maintained a scientific station
there 1976-82.
