City on the river Dnieper, W USSR; population
(1987) 338,000. Industries include textiles,
distilling, and flour milling. It was founded
882 as the chief town of a Slavic tribe and
was captured by Napoleon 1812. The Germans
took the city 1941, and it was liberated by
the Soviets 1943. Nearby is Katyn Forest.
