Seaport in the extreme SW of Honshu, Japan;
population (1985) 269,000. It was opened to
foreign trade 1890. The first of the
Sino-Japanese Wars ended with a treaty signed
at Shimonoseki 1895. Industries include
fishing, shipbuilding, engineering, textiles,
and chemicals.
