A Special Economic Zone established in 1980
opposite Hong Kong on the coast of Guangdong
province, S China. Its status provided much
of the driving force of its spectacular
development in the 1980s when its population
rose from 20,000 in 1980 to 600,000 in 1989.
Part of the population is `rotated' newcomers
from other provinces who return to their
homes after a few years spent learning
foreign business techniques.
