Capital of New Mexico, USA, on the Santa Fe
River, 65 km/40 mi W of Las Vegas; population
(1980) 48,935, many Spanish-speaking. A
number of buildings date from the Spanish
period, including a palace 1609-10; the
cathedral 1869 is on the site of a monastery
built 1622. Santa Fe produces American Indian
jewellery and textiles; its chief industry is
tourism. It is the oldest state capital in
the USA.

the Salado River 153 km/95 mi N of Rosario;
population (1980) 287,000. It has shipyards
and exports timber, cattle, and wool. It was
founded 1573, and the 1853 constitution was
adopted here.
