Capital of Tenerife and of the Canary
Islands; population (1986) 211,000. It is a
fuelling port and cable centre. Industry also
includes oil refining, pharmaceuticals, and
trade in fruit. Santa Cruz was bombarded by
the British admirals Blake 1657 and Nelson
1797 (the action in which he lost his arm).
