Port on the Bay of Biscay, Cantabria, N Spain; population (1986) 189,000. Industries include chemicals, textiles, vehicles, and shipyards. It was sacked by the French marshal Soult 1808 and was largely rebuilt after a fire 1941. Palaeolithic cave wall paintings of bison, wild boar, and deer were discovered at the nearby Altamira site 1879.
