Greek island in the Aegean Sea, off the W coast of Turkey; area 476 sq km/184 sq mi; capital Limen Vatheos; population (1981) 31,600. Mountainous but fertile, it produces wine and olive oil. The mathematician Pythagoras was born here. The town of Teganion is on the site of the ancient city of Samos, which was destroyed by Darius I of Persia.
