A member or descendant of the colonists
forced to settle in Samaria (now N Israel) by
the Assyrians after their occupation of the
ancient kingdom of Israel 722 BC. Samaritans
adopted a form of Judaism, but adopted only
the Pentateuch, the five books of Moses of
the Old Testament, and regarded their temple
on Mount Gerizim as the true sanctuary.
