An organic compound, the first specific antibacterial agent. Because of its destructive effect on Spirochaeta pallida, it was used in the treatment of syphilis before the development of antibiotics. It was discovered by Paul Ehrlich in 1909. Another name for it is 606, referring to the number of experiments performed by Ehrlich in its discovery.
