A law adopted in the Middle Ages by several
European royal houses, excluding women from
succession to the throne. The name derives
mistakenly from the Salian or northern
division of the Franks, who supposedly
practised it. In Sweden 1980 such a provision
was abrogated to allow Princess Victoria to
become crown princess.
