The main N-S route between Kabul, capital of
Afghanistan, and the Soviet frontier; length
422 km/264 mi. The high-altitude Salang Pass
and Salang Tunnel cross a natural break in
the Hindu Kush mountains about 100 km/60 mi N
of Kabul. This supply route was a major
target of the Mujaheddin resistance fighters
during the Soviet occupation of Aghanistan.
