Industrial city (metallurgy) in Chelyabinsk
region, USSR, in the S Urals; population
(1991) 206,000. It was founded 1754 as an
iron- and copper-working settlement,
destroyed 1774 by a peasant uprising, but
developed as an armaments centre from the
time of Napoleon's invasion of Russia.
