Yangon, since 1989 the name for Rangoon
Capital and chief port of Myanmar on the
Yangon river, 32 km/20 mi from the Indian
Ocean; population (1983) 2,459,000. Products
include timber, oil, and rice. The city Dagon
was founded on the site AD 746; it was given
the name Rangoon (meaning `end of conflict')
by King Alaungpaya 1755.
