Japanese port on Tokyo Bay; population (1994)
3,072,000. Industries include shipbuilding,
oil refining, engineering, textiles, glass,
and clothing. In 1859 it was the first
Japanese port opened to foreign trade. From
then it grew rapidly from a small fishing
village to the chief centre of trade with
Europe and the USA. Almost destroyed in an
earthquake 1923, it was again rebuilt after
World War II.
