In Scandinavian mythology, the world tree, a
sacred ash that spans heaven and hell. It is
is evergreen and tended by the Norns,
goddesses of past, present, and future.
Yggdrasil has three roots with a spring under
each one. One root covers Nifelheim, the
realm of the dead; another runs under
Jotunheim, where the giants live; the third
under Asgard, home of the gods. By the Norns'
well at the third root, the gods regularly
gather to confer. Various animals inhabit and
eat of the tree.
